How to
Take in, sell, and pay out a consigned item
A consignor, tracked item, sale-time split, payout, and tax-year trail stay connected.
- 1
Set the shop's default consignment split and any category-specific rates, then add the consignor.
Shop · consignment → rates; consignment → add consignor
An address and tax ID can be added later, but collect a W-9 before filing is due. Stored tax IDs display only their last four digits in ordinary screens.
- 2
From the consignor, choose Add consigned item, create or select the catalog item, and take in the exact tracked stock unit.
Shop · consignment → the consignor → add consigned item
A split must resolve from the unit override, its category, or the shop default before intake succeeds. Consignment is per physical unit, not just a bulk catalog count.
- 3
Sell that exact unit through the register and verify the receipt before promising the consignor an amount.

The consignor obligation and split are frozen from the rate in effect at sale time. Changing a rate later does not rewrite an earned payout.
- 4
Open Consignment → Payouts, review one consignor's unpaid obligations, select the lines to include, and record one payout with its method, reference, and note.
Shop · consignment → payouts
A negative line is a clawback from an item returned after payout and nets against future obligations. A zero or negative group cannot be paid.
- 5
At tax time, open the 1099-MISC report for the year and resolve missing tax IDs for consignors whose actual paid total reaches the displayed threshold.
Shop · consignment → 1099-MISC
The report is based on payouts actually marked paid, not sales or unpaid obligations. The app prepares the report; it does not file the form for you.
