How to
Sell, look up and redeem gift certificates
A gift certificate is sold with a code, its balance can be checked, and the code is spent at the register.
- 1
One time: add an item people buy as a gift certificate. In the catalog, create it, turn off the on-hand quantity, and in the 'gift certificates' section tick 'selling this issues a gift certificate'.
Shop · Catalog → new item → gift certificates
Without that setting a sale takes the money and issues no certificate. One item covers every amount, because the certificate is worth whatever the line comes to.
- 2
To sell one, add that item to the sale at the register with the amount and take payment. The code is on the receipt and in the confirmation email.
Shop · Shop → Checkout → Register
- 3
To check a balance, open Gift certificates and enter the whole code, or the last four digits, and choose 'find'. Open a row to see its balance, 'issued for' amount and expiry.
Shop · Shop → Gift certificates
- 4
To redeem, at the register choose 'gift certificate, deposit or store credit? enter its code →', type the code and choose 'apply'.
Shop · Checkout → Register → gift certificate, deposit or store credit
If it covers the whole total, finish the sale without charging a card. A refund of a web order paid by gift certificate returns the money to the certificate.
Worth knowing
- Selling a certificate is not a taxable sale; tax applies to what it is later spent on. The Gift certificates page totals what the shop still owes on outstanding certificates.
