How to
Change a customer's email or phone, or fix 'email already in use'
The customer's email or phone is corrected, or the duplicate that is blocking it is resolved without losing history.
- 1
Open the customer from Customers and choose 'edit'. Change the email or phone and choose 'save changes'.
Shop · Customers → open the customer → edit
Editing needs permission to manage customers. Address changes are made in the 'addresses' panel on the customer's page, not on this form.
- 2
If it says 'that email is already on another contact record', the address belongs to another record, often a person who only ever signed an agreement. Choose 'use existing contact' (it names the contact), then 'yes, use that contact' to adopt it.
Shop · the edit customer form
Adopting moves that contact's history onto this customer and cannot be undone. Only do it when they are the same person; otherwise 'keep editing' and use a different email.
- 3
If you are adding a new customer and it says an email or phone 'already belongs to' someone, choose 'Open' beside the name to go to the existing customer, or change the email or phone you typed.
Shop · Customers → new customer
Check the existing customer before creating a second record for the same person: two records split their orders and history.
Worth knowing
- On a rental or trial, the customer details panel shows the same conflict with 'open the customer page to use that contact', which opens in a new tab so your unsaved changes stay put.
