How to

Find the sales tax by jurisdiction report

You open the report of tax collected, by jurisdiction, for a month or quarter, and know how to fill any gaps it flags.

  1. 1

Open Reports and choose 'sales tax →'. The page is titled 'sales tax by jurisdiction'.

Shop · Shop → Reports → sales tax

Reports need the reports permission. The report nets out refunds and leaves out test orders.

  2. 2

Pick a period with the quick ranges, or choose a month or quarter under 'or pick a month or quarter'. Use 'export CSV' if your accountant wants a file.

  3. 3

Read any notice near the top. 'Not assigned to a tax district' means those sales were rung up before the store's tax district was filled in; the tax itself was collected correctly. 'Do not add up' means a sale's tax, rate and taxable amount disagree; compare it with the receipt.

    Shop

Set the store's tax district under 'Set up sales tax for the shop' and every later sale records it. Sales already rung up keep what was recorded at the time, so ask support to assign the older ones.

  4. 4

To compare what you collected with what you owe, use 'collected vs owed, by month or quarter →' (the 'sales tax liability' report), when it is shown.

Shop · Reports → sales tax liability

Worth knowing

  • The report is a filing aid, not a filing, and it is laid out for California (CDTFA) returns.
  • Shipping tax has its own report, 'shipping tax', on the same Reports page.
